Hypnotherapist Registration

The field of hypnotherapy is currently unregulated by the UK government – and so far there are no plans to regulate the profession. However voluntary self-regulation of the profession is encouraged by the UK government and there are several hypnotherapy organisations and registers that maintain high professional standards and are well known to the public.

In theory you can set up to practice hypnotherapy with no training and no membership of professional organisations. However in practice that would put you at a severe disadvantage in terms of public confidence in your training and professionalism.

We recommend that hypnotherapists register with at least one of the major registers and possibly with several. Often you will need to be registered with a professional body to obtain insurance, to work at a holistic clinic or to receive referrals from GPs.  In addition members of the public searching for hypnotherapists will look to see what organisations you are registered with and the codes of practice and ethics that you adhere to.
